You can eat sweets while you are on a diet, it just depends on what sweets you choose. You can’t just sit around and eat snickers or M&Ms, that’s not going to cut it. What you need to do is figure out your daily caloric maintenance. You can do this using a calorie calculator. It will give you a rough estimate about how many calories you need to eat in order to keep at the current weight you are. So, if you want to lose weight you have to reduce calories. In reality, it does not matter where the calories come from, so you could in theory lose weight and be on a fat loss diet and eat candies from the supermarket. But that won’t yield the results you want.
The first problem with this method of dieting is that you are going to no feel full enough. The candies and sweets that are sold in supermarkets (stuff like snickers, M&M’s, Mounds, and of course all of these sugary non-chocolate candies) contain high fructose corn syrup. This is super high calorie dense, which means that you get a load of calories for a small serving. A better idea for losing fat and staying on your diet would be to make your own sweets.
You can certainly make cakes, pies, and brownies (and they will be less calorie dense because they will be made with healthy ingredients–and use real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup) but you could also make fun little candies.
For instance, you could get a bag of shredded coconut (one of the organic brands if you want to go super healthy) and then melt up some dark chocolate. Not only is this lower in calories than a lot of the chocolate coconut candies you get in the supermarket, but it is healthy. The dark chocolate has tons of healthy benefits, so you will actually get some healthy benefits when eating this.
If you want to really turn up the health benefits, you can find some chocolate recipes that contain things such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, or dried fruits.
When you’re making your own healthy desserts, you also have the advantage of being able to use your own healthy fats. You can choose to use canola oil instead of lard or hydrogenated oil, or you could use coconut oil (which is super healthy) as well as heart healthy fats such as walnut oil or macadamia nut oil. So, instead of just taking a sweet and feeling guilty about it, you can eat it and get that great taste, but also feel like you are doing something great for your body.
